What is improvisational theatre?
Improvisational theatre – improv for short – is theatre without a script: lines, characters and scenes are created live on stage, in the moment. The performers take their inspiration from suggestions shouted out by the audience – so every show is a one-night-only première you will never see again.
The most popular show formats
Theatersport
Two improv teams compete against each other, and the audience decides who played the better scenes. In Switzerland, the Ida Theatersport Liga organises regular league matches.
Maestro
All performers start on stage together and are gradually eliminated until only the Maestro remains. The audience scores every scene.
Short scenes (shortform)
A fast series of short games and scenes – quick, funny and perfect if you are watching improv for the very first time.
Longform
A full evening's story grows out of a single suggestion. Characters and plot lines keep developing all night long.
